Finally. A day All About Me. Bring it on!
Father's Day.
OK, right? A day of being waited on. Presents. Breakfast any way I wanted it. Fathers Day Sex. Anyway I wante-- um oh, um, nevermind. I get to sleep in as late as I want, play frisbee, watch sports, drink a fridgeful of Yuengling, not mow the lawn and walk the house unshaven, scratching my whoo-hahs and spending the day in my Red Sox pajamas... right?
Cut to reality.....
The house is quiet now. Father's Day will be over in an hour. I just put in my favorite CD, Sister Hazel, Somewhere More Familiar. Boys are sleeping. Matthew's in my bed, on my pillow. Light's on and Michele looks like she is reading, but she's been resonating that high level of apneatic moose-mating snore for awhile now. I caught a second wind about an hour ago and read my sister's blog. She's pretty inspiring. Her pics and sentiments to go along with them are something special.
OK, so Father's Day...
Good Morning. I woke early. Coffee on the patio. Got my book. Couldn't wait to ease into a special day, All About Me. I gave up on the Father's Day Sex thing at about 4am.
Got a fire going in the fire pit. Incense. Hawks in the trees. Cardinals darting the perimeter.
Big deep, Sunday morning satisfaction. Deep down, I really really wanted a cold dark beer at 8am, but went for the caffeinated bliss instead. Had a nice. mother and son call with my Mom. Today might be Father's Day, but every weekend is Mother's Day.
Take two sips and here they come. Suddenly, I got two boys, aka 140 lbs and 4 knees of youthful wiggle-wormness on my lap. There is nothing I find more "relaxing" than 4 young pointed knees magnetically drawn to my family jewels...
David tries to tell me something. He does not remember yet that it's Father's Day. He sits up close and he has this moment, where he tries to explain something he does not know how to explain..."Dad, I was just thinking, ...." Reference: David is seven, he tries to tell people he is 8. He is 7 and he is not supposed to be "just thinking..."
"Dad, it's weird. It's really weird. There are lots of people in this world, hundreds, and I don't know how to say it, but out of everyone, all those people, it's really to weird to think about, but why is it that I like playing with you and being with you the best?"
Talk about a knee to the whoo-ha's. It is the best damn thing in the whole wide world a father has ever been able to hear.
BAM. I could probably stop there. My day was complete. It was maybe 9:30am. Talk about contemplating my existance after that? Dude, today was just the best day ever.
Hey. Deep down, I do know that Father's Day is not just about me or the level of unshaven BO I can soak into the couch cushions. I reached out and wished a number of people I think of highly, a Happy Father's Day. I heard back from most.
David bought me a Jeff Dunham DVD - crazy kid was SO happy to give something he just knew I would love, he couldn't even wrap it. Huge. Big Smile.
A special Father's Day wish goes out to someone I work with - a new father, his baby girl born early, but healthy and she is filled with beauty and hope. In a day filled with thoughts about family, B & J & T were there.
Somewhere between my second or third cup of coffee, I look and I have this unsolicated unread message bleeping on my phone - from someone in CT who had became a friend, but then I lost touch with, from being over 1250 miles away...and he sends this inspirational, sappy, motivating message that clutches my heart, at the most perfect, most unexpected time. It involves courage, second chances and challenging your heart. Basically everything I am faced with right now, at this very moment with both family and Work.
Whatever. Easy to dismiss. Spam.
But, Whatever yourself.
It's Father's Day. I held my wife's hand today. I splashed in the ocean with my boys today. I jammed with friends today. I grilled steak. I laughed. I got sandy. I got wet. I got sweaty. I drank wine. I ate well. I fell asleep in front of the TV tonight... I heard from Family. I heard from Friends. Even though I learned Father's Day Sex is not in the Bible and should not be expected......there is SO much more I could've written about. It was a special kind of day.
Tomorrow I wake up at 6am and it will be time to find the courage to embrace my second chances and to challenge myself...like everyone else I work for and that I work with...
And as I drive to work, I will remember today....
Happy Father's Day.
