Happy Graduation Josh

It was an interesting mix of feelings, watching Josh graduate last night.

Amazing Pride.

Yet, also a hidden fear for his future.

I listened to the speeches and felt moved. And motivated. Even at this age.

Everything seemed equally aimed and inspiring and relevant - to both an 18 year old graduate, and to a forty-something year old father in the bleachers.
... But today was also the kind of thing where it was hard not to think about the fact that I wish I was a better father.

Kindergarten Thanks

It is the end of the school year. David's first year of "Big Boy School."

On the very first nervous day of school, a shy wide-eyed boy boy asked David, "Can I be your friend?" It was the cutest thing ever. David and Kush are still best buds.

Also on that very first day, two nervous parents met Mrs. Dake, David's very first teacher. It was now upon her shoulders to introduce this whole new concept; this whole new thing called School and an Education to a booger picking, bologna eating, pajama loving, little boy with cowlicks and make him like being in school for the next 18 years of his life... Basically, we felt David's whole success in life, hinged on her.... No pressure, right?!

Fast forward to this past Thursday.... The last full day of school....

David is seated in front of his class, sitting in Mrs. Dake's big oversized rocking chair, his class and teacher are seated on the floor below him... an oversized Dadman is sitting in a tiny kindergarten chair in the back of the class... silently watching, silently admiring, silently getting that lump in the throat, as David is reading a book to his class.... reading the page, then holding the book for all to see... something as simple as that.... what is that feeling I'm feeling? What is that feeling I have lodged in my throat? How can something as simple as that make a grown man sniffle?

Obviously, there is no way to wrap up an entire school year into a few appreciative paragraphs.

But as I watched the kids around Mrs. Dake... And as I watched Mrs. Dake around the kids... It wasn't about addition or subtraction, or homework, or the lesson plans... David was very lucky to have Mrs. Dake and everything she is as a person, as his teacher.

As his Very First Teacher Ever.

He's off to a pretty good start.

Final Thanks - The Jammers 2010

This Tournament belongs to Paul and Cheryl. However, they do such a good job at making everyone feel so welcome, that you can't help but believe there's a piece of The Jammers that you want to hold close, as if your very own. Thank You Paul and Cheryl.

Sad to say - Our Jammer's Weekend is officially over. I must now return to my crusty, and cranky and worrisome self....Sorry Michele.

Our family just had a wonderful dinner with Bethany, Laerbs, Mary and her sister's family - Bill, Julie and their kids. Our kids and their kids got along really well. We wonder if this might be the start of a lifelong friendship for a couple of kids who may look back and say, "We met at the Jammers in 2010 and have been friends ever since!" Thank You All. This is the kind of tournament that could do that.

New faces to the Jammers brought a whole new energy to Frizbeach. Thank You Daniel, James, Z, Tony and Ritchie.

Familiar faces, like Pat, like Craig, like Tito; Sarah, Kurt, and Rodney; like Josh and JeffO, were missing. We missed you.

From Michele and I…..

We love you GrandMa Kenny!

Thank You Murf. Thank you Zach - er, I mean, Zack – er, I mean, ZaQ.

Thank You Laerbs and Family. And Extended Family.

Thank You Lori and Tony. Seriously – Thank You. What a blast to get together at the last minute and play well when it counts. I had so much fun. (But again – sorry about my Counter!)

Thank You Daniel. I was going to offer you a chair for the weekend, but I don’t think I ever saw you sit down!

Thank You Dan Berman. Thank You Paul S. Thank You Lisa. Thank You Ann. Thank You Bethany.

Thank You Pops, er, I mean, Sugar Pops. Happy Birthday!

Thank You Jake. Thank You Cindy. Thank You Pipo. Thank You Darryl – wow you are fun to watch play in the wind! Thank You Jeff & Nanette. Thank You Bernie.

There is something special about you all – Michele and I humbly Thank You.

Saturday Night. 18 Large Pizzas. 3 huge Salads. 21 bottles of Wine. 16 different kinds of Beer. Perfectly made Margaritas. And no policemen! Sno-Cones from Frisbee Dan. FlashFlight Freestyle in the middle of the night in the middle of the street. Thank You Lori, for saving our son from future dental work!

Sunday Night. Excellent dinner at Paul & Cheryl’s. The shrimp was amazingly awesome! Thank You for the Italian Wine. Thank You for the Pasta and Shrimp and Chicken and every spice in between!

Monday Night. Sushi and the Grill at Ichiban’s. Latenight Lifeguard Scarecrows and locked doors at 1am!

The Weekend. The winds were stiff, yet playable. Being a full moon, the beach was Huge. The competition was close enough to elicit controversy. The mob-ups and the family-like vibe was as equally intense.

Some people showed up as early as Tuesday. Some people left as late as Wednesday.

Isn’t that what makes this weekend so special?

Nah – it’s more than that – it’s The Love that Paul has for you all that shines through – year after year. THAT is what makes The Jammers so special.

And I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this – but when it comes time that someone has to leave the beach and go home…?

Paul feels it. And I think he feels it all year long.

Thank You Paul & Cheryl!
